Introduction
People write letters for all sorts of reasons: to tell someone something, to complain, to ask for information, or to apply for something, like a job.
Language and layout
If you want a letter to achieve its purpose (do its job), it's important to use the right sort of language and layout.
A clearly laid out, clearly written letter is much more likely to get you what you want than a badly written, badly organised letter.
Formal letters
You write formal letters to people you don't know or to organisations, for example, newspapers or businesses.
Finish by saying what you would like to happen next, for example, I hope to hear from you soon.
Informal letters
You would write an informal letter to someone you know well.
